An Email from Motorcycle Mike–formerly known as Roommate

irst a little background. I ride my motorcycle as much as
possible. Riding is my one true passion. One of the outlets for this
passion is long distance motorcycle rallies. This is a type of
competition that is a bit of a cross between a giant scavenger hunt
and the cannon ball run. It is not unusual for riders to go coast to
coast in 48 hours during these competitions.

In August I will be competing in the largest long distance rally of
the year which will stretch over the entire continent over a 7 day
period. To give an idea of the scale of the competition, there is a
good chance I (and nearly 100 other competitors) will be in Alaska and Key West
during this rally.

On to my question…

I was trying to think of a way to give back to the community while
serving my selfish need to ride all the time. I think something
similar to the March of Dimes could be good.

Here is my idea:

I'm going to ride the big rally this August (It is called the "Butt
Lite IV) and I'll likely do over 7000 miles during the competition.
If I could get different people/corporations to donate money on a per
mile basis I could raise a lot of money for a good cause. (Habitat
for Humanity or Ronald McDonald house maybe?)

Assuming I do 7K miles I could have two "starting" donation, but
allow any level of donations… people could donate .01 / mile which
would equal roughly 70 dollars. Companies maybe .10 / mile or 700
bucks. This could end up raising a ton of money for people who need
it more than we do.

My question: Does anyone here have any knowledge of or experience
with fund raising for charity? Are there legal ramifications that
I'm not aware of? Any suggestions on what charity to donate to?
Also, do any of you think you would be interested in donating?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
